Listed as a historical monument, Clos de Vougeot Chateau is emblematic of the Burgundy region and its wines. This multilingual tour with a touch-screen tablet will take you into a passionate history, an authentic and digital experience.
‘– But Babette, what’s in this bottle? she asked, her voice trembling. This can’t be wine? – Wine, Madam? No! It’s Clos de Vougeot 1846! Martine had never heard of wines having a name. She was silent.’ This quote from Babette’s Feast, by the famous Danish author Karen Blixen, shows the extent of the international reputation of Clos de Vougeot, one of the great vineyards of Burgundy.
Located between the vineyards of Chambolle-Musigny and the Vosne-Romanee, in the Cote de Nuits region, the Clos de Vougeot Chateau is distinguished by its magnificent proportions and its 3 km of external walls. The first owners of the site, the Cistercian monks, built the vast cellar in the twelfth century. It can hold up to 2,000 bottles of wine and houses the huge pressing machines. The Renaissance-style chateau itself dates from the fifteenth century. Nationally listed as a historic monument since 1949, this architectural jewel proudly reflects the colours and values of Burgundy.
Spectacular aerial images, recently filmed by drone, combined with special effects and computer-generated images, plunge you into 900 years of Burgundy history.
Since 1945, the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Wine Tasting Cup (Tastevins) hold their different district or ‘chapter’ banquets at the chateau, celebrating the food and fine wine of Burgundy.
The digital age has breached the walls of the Clos de Vougeot Chateau
At the heart of the ‘Climates of Burgundy’, an area of vineyards listed as a World Heritage site by Unesco in 2015, the chateau hosts concerts and tours to promote different types of cultural events. Via stories, videos and old photos, the touch-sensitive tablets informatively and entertainingly reveal the history of the grand cellar and the ancient wine-pressing machines.
Written by Jean-Francois Bazin and narrated by Pierre Arditi, the film Jamais en vain, toujours en vin (Never in Vain, Always in Wine) is projected onto a wide screen in the former monks’ dormitory. The spectacular aerial images, recently filmed by drone, combined with special effects and computer-generated images, plunge you into 900 years of Burgundy history. The tour then follows a path marked by interactive and multilingual information panels, cleverly incorporated into the wine barrels. Without doubt, the digital age has breached the walls of the Clos de Vougeot Chateau!
