Bourdeau Château: a romantic break on Lake Bourget

Bourdeau Château has a charm all of its own and boasts a wealth of attractions. Blessed with magnificent views, the château and its grounds have a poetry and sense of harmony that inspire wonder in every visitor.

The lake at Bourget shimmers in the sunlight, not a ripple disturbing its surface, reflecting only the sky above and mountains around in perfect tranquillity. Overlooking this majestic stretch of water, on a hillside lined with vineyards, stands the elegant outline of the château. Far from being an imposing fortress, this is a vast stone mansion flanked by four turrets: Bourdeau Château.

No one can remain indifferent to the beauty of such a panorama. The great names of Romantic literature once devoted themselves to contemplating this idyllic landscape, drawing inspiration from the shores of the lake as one dips one’s pen in an inkwell. The crisp air and the whisper of the wind, the wood-tinted scent of the mountains, and the soft drone of bumblebees gathering nectar in their hives... there is no doubt that these captivating surroundings induce a sense of peace, calm and reverie.

The stone walls suddenly resound to the poetry of Lamartine in the most apt way possible: Bourdeau Château is well and truly a place where “time suspends its flight”, where the “propitious hours suspend their course” to “let us enjoy the fleeting delights that fill our fairest stay”.

The magic continues on entering the château through the heavy castle doors. A wide wooden staircase in the entrance hall leads to a set of spacious rooms furnished with simple, leisurely comforts and decoration that will allow your mind to wander freely. The library and adjoining lounges, which open onto the terrace, are lined with monumental windows that bathe the rooms in sunlight.

From here you can easily see the lake below as well as the gardens and vineyard rising in terraces. The wines produced on the estate can be enjoyed in the cellar of the château together with the great wines of the Alps. These precious nectars are accompanied by refined cuisine, served in an old-style castle atmosphere around the huge fireplace sitting in the centre of the room. It is a thrilling moment of great harmony that delights the senses, offering a foretaste of the talents of the chef at the helm of the château’s unusual gourmet restaurant: Le Chat qui Nage.

France’s Romantic poets were not mistaken in choosing to take up residence in this unique spot. The stone walls suddenly resound to the poetry of Lamartine in the most apt way possible: Bourdeau Château is well and truly a place where “time suspends its flight”, where the “propitious hours suspend their course” to “let us enjoy the fleeting delights that fill our fairest stay”.

Each journey along the Beaujolais Wine Route is unique thanks to the different stops along the way, each filled with new delights and curiosities. Stop in Romanèche-Thorins to visit the Windmill, which gave its name to one of the most famous crus in Beaujolais, and have fun as you explore Europe’s first vine and wine theme park, the Hameau Duboeuf.

Beaujolais will offer plenty of pleasant surprises throughout your trip, with almost 200 cellars open to the public which meet the “Beaujolais: une terre, des vins, un accueil privilégié” quality scheme.

A historic heritage in a beautiful landscape

A definite highlight of this route is Beaujeu, the historic capital of Beaujolais, where the Maison du Terroir Beaujolais visitor centre and its range of family-friendly tourist activities and entertainment await! Follow this with a climb to the summit of Mont Brouilly and admire the breathtaking panorama of the slopes and Saône valley. You’ll also find a géoscope, an information panel with details on the diversity of the Beaujolais soil and terrain and how the landscape was formed.

Next it’s time for a stop in Vaux-en-Beaujolais, also known as Clochemerle, where you can immerse yourself in the world of Gabriel Chevallier’s novel; be sure to visit the village cellar where you can sample Beaujolais Villages or grape juice by the glass in a cosy setting.

Pierres Dorées villages and Beaujolais Bistrots

At Villefranche-sur-Saône, travel back in time as you follow the city trail and discover houses, courtyards and other remnants of a Renaissance past.

Finally, in the south of Beaujolais, don’t miss out on a piece of Tuscany in France as you stroll through the streets of the 39 traditional Pierres Dorées (Golden Stones) villages, awarded the “Vignobles & Découvertes” quality label. At Oingt, Ternand or Charnay, you’ll never tire of these houses and buildings that are built from ochre stone and bask in the sunlight.

And if you fancy a bite to eat along the way, why not visit one of the Bistrots Beaujolais dotted throughout the vineyard, where tasty meals accompanied by Beaujolais wines await!
