Domaine Céline & Frédéric Gueguen

Domaine Céline & Frédéric Gueguen lies halfway between the vineyards of Chablis and Auxerre. Here the owners cultivate a wide range of climats - parcels of vines - with a singular passion for the riches of the wine-growing region of Chablis.

The very first harvest at Domaine Céline & Frédéric Gueguen was back in 2013, and the owners have put their heart and soul into showcasing the plethora of grape varieties planted over the 36 hectares of the estate. The sauvignon, aligoté, sacy, pinot noir and césar grapes thrive amidst the rows of vines - not to mention, of course, the star of the show, the much-vaunted chardonnay!

The story starts in the fields, where the painstaking work follows the traditions of winemaking and respects the soil. The grapes are cosseted and carefully selected before being vinified in vats made from 100% stainless steel. It’s a process that produces a genuine, honest appellation that reflects the terroir in all its splendour!

Céline and Frédéric are eager to share their craftsmanship and cuvées with as many people as possible, which is why they throw their cellar open to the general public. A host of tastings is organised based on a selection of five wines complemented by a choice of platters consisting of charcuterie, cheeses and gougères.

The estate also runs trips into the great outdoors so that participants can get to know the appellations and terroirs around Chablis in more detail. These excursions - on foot or by minibus - are a great opportunity to marvel at the beauty of the vineyard while gaining real insight into the profession of winegrower.

And, since the Chablis vineyard is brimming with treasures just waiting to be discovered, the owners invite visitors who are passing through to extend their holiday with a break on the estate. A number of apartments and two guests houses with garden provide all the peace and quiet you need for a bucolic break where you can soak up the region’s gentle lifestyle. With its small, picture-postcard villages surrounded by hills, and its vine-lined trails winding along forests paths, there’s no doubt about it: the area around Chablis has more than enough to win over curious and adventurous souls who want to escape from it all!

Côte Chalonnaise beats to the rhythm of the Paulée wine festival

With autumn here again, the winegrowers of Côte Chalonnaise invite oenophiles to visit the Paulée, the great festival that heralds the end of the grape harvest. A happy atmosphere sets the pulse racing in the vineyards and town of Chalon-sur-Saône for three days.

This event is rooted in the region’s traditions, apparently taking its name from the final shovel (“pelle”) full of grapes emptied into the press at the end of the harvest.

Today, it is first and foremost a byword for a fully-fledged hedonist marathon with a blend of wine tastings and gastronomic banquets.

All the ingredients are there for a weekend you’ll never forget: the parade of winegrowers’ guilds, trumpet players and photo exhibitions!

A fruit-flavoured getaway at Ferme Fruirouge

It was in the delightful hamlet of Concœur, surrounded by the vineyards of the Côte-d'Or, that the Olivier family planted their aptly named "Ferme Fruirouge", dedicated in its entirety to small summer fruit!

Naturally enough, the family grows iconic Burgundy blackcurrants on its 13 hectares of organic land, not to mention raspberries, strawberries, redcurrants, cherries and vineyard peaches. Everything is harvested to make jams, sweets, syrups, fruit brandy, fruit butter and similar condiments. The star of this wide, totally fruity selection is the Burgundy PGI crème de cassis, an all-important ingredient in the famous kir served at aperitif time

The farm opens its doors year-round to show off the secrets of its craftsmanship to the general public. You can learn all about the old-fashioned artisanal techniques on a guided tour and see the copper basins where the jams are left to simmer over a low heat. In the old production workshop, now converted into a video room, a film traces the work carried out in the fields of vines as the seasons change, from harvesting to processing the fruit. When the weather is fine, visitors are even invited to get out into the fields so they can explore the vines and, if the spirit moves them, solve a series of puzzles in a field game: a life-size escape game!

When the tours reach their end, there are tutored wine tasting sessions where participants can compare the 100% natural aromas of the various blackcurrant products made at Ferme Fruirouge. And anyone who wants to prolong the pleasure of their taste buds by taking a few purchases home with them can stop off at the farm shop in the barn or at the Fruirouge & Cie, l’épicerie fermière store in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Here you’ll find the entire range of delicious products made by the Olivier family alongside local specialties and the top cuvées from the family or friends' vineyards.

More than enough, in other words, to leave enthusiasts feeling “berry happy”!

La Cuverie de Vosne-Romanée by Comte Liger-Belair

The Cuverie de Vosne-Romanée, designed by the Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, won the "Exceptional Offer" award at the 2024 Wine Tourism Trophies in the "Stay at the domain and gastronomy in the vineyard" category.

This charming venue, which is open to one and all, houses a deli, café and wine bar (with 1,700 labels) under the same roof.

The best local wines sit alongside cuvées from other regions. The sole criterion for selecting them? They have to be either organic or biodynamic. Maison Auvigue: the crown jewel of the Mâconnais

The Mâconnais white wines produced by Maison Auvigue from its home in southern Burgundy are its calling card, the apotheosis of the vineyard’s major appellations.

This family-run business, which started life trading in wine, fell deeply in love with the terroir of Burgundy as it gradually made the move towards growing vines. Four generations later, the estate now boasts 8 hectares stretching out over the land of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation.

As pioneers of the plot-by-plot approach, members of the Auvigue family have always been deeply committed to retaining the authentic character of the climats. Today, these traditional winegrowers are continuing to do their utmost to respect the terroir, starting with the conversion to organic farming. Alongside the grapes harvested from the fields of vines, other carefully-selected bunches are collected from partner winegrowers to add to the cuvées vinified in situ. What’s so distinctive about this range? It brings together wines that are exclusively white from the following appellations: Pouilly-Fuissé and Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru, Mâcon-Solutré, Mâcon-Fuissé, Saint-Véran and Viré-Clessé.

By far the best way to discover this myriad of noteworthy vintages is to drop in to the estate. After a brief tour of the vineyards overlooked by the kindly silhouette of Roche de Solutré (a limestone escarpment), head for the wine cellars in the old Romanesque church in the village of Fuissé. Two vat rooms and almost 300 barrels have found refuge under the stone vaults of this amazing site!

This temple to vinification is the perfect spot to learn more about how the region's iconic wines are made. There’s even a sensory workshop where you can discover the diverse aromas that are so typical of the white wines and find out more about the maturation process in the oak barrels.

For the tasting, the spotlight focuses on four to six wines produced on the estate. In the intimate surroundings of the vault, the distinct personality of each cuvée brings to light a different aspect of Maison Auvigue’s craftsmanship. It’s a heritage that showcases all the glory of the Mâconnais… for you to enjoy one sip at a time!

Domaine Jeannin-Naltet has been producing wine in Côte Châlonnaise since 1858. Blessed with extraordinary potential, the estate enjoys a unique status in the region’s vineyards.

And for good reason! This family business is mainly classified as Mercurey Premier Cru, and it has the monopoly of the Clos des Grands Voyens climat, a crown jewel among the fields of vines.

The estate welcomes the general public for tours of the cellar by appointment and tastings in line with the opening hours - all with the aim of promoting this matchless terroir, which is enriched by a deep attachment to the traditions of winemaking.

And what’s that little added extra? The estate is also one of the last in Burgundy to produce typical liqueurs from the local area, such as Marc, Fine and Ratafia.

La Tour du Pouilly-Fumé

The Tour du Pouilly-Fumé on the banks of the river in the village of Pouilly-sur-Loire is not to be missed, a gateway to unravelling the secrets of the vineyards and AOC Pouilly Fumé.

This winery is so much more than a museum: it’s a place of adventure and discovery that is open to the general public. Thanks to its inventive design, visitors find themselves immersed in a multi-sensory universe that showcases the Pouilly vineyards and the know-how of the local winegrowers.

The visit begins in a room that looks like a tasting cellar. Videos are projected onto the stone walls retracing the age-old history of the vineyard and two of the region’s star appellations: Pouilly-sur-Loire and Pouilly-Fumé.

In the second room, visitors are introduced to the work of the people who tend to the vines with the changing seasons. Small-scale special effects physically recreate the feeling that you're actually out there in the vineyard! From the cold of winter to the heat of summer via the autumn rains, the stage is set for a journey to the very heart of the vineyard.

After passing through the awe-inspiring winemaking room - where the basics of fermentation are explained in detail - visitors are invited to go down to the Aroma Cellar. Here, ten ballons or wine glasses are arranged on oak barrels with an exciting nose for anyone who is curious. These serve to introduce the aromatic families of Pouilly white wines: lemon confit, gingerbread, white floral fragrance, tropical fruit… a dizzying succession of scents prepares oenophiles for the tasting to follow!

Whilst the adults sample a selection of four local wines, the children are served cordials and are given a booklet with games on the history of the vineyard, the grape varieties, the terroirs and the tastes linked to the grapes.

In addition to the all-year-round tour route at the Tour du Pouilly Fumé, the tourist office offers lots of activities for novel ways to explore the Pouilly vineyards and the surrounding area: climb to the very top of the Saint-Andelain belvedere; take a walk through the vineyards; enjoy a great getaway by bike or embark on a trip by canoe - each and every experience promising you the most wonderful time!
